You just cannot get bored in Warsaw. Anyone will find something interesting here.

Some of the worth of visiting places and attractions are described below. They are intended to encourage you to visiting my city. Just discover Warsaw!

THE OLD TOWN

Initially a ducal stronghold which developed into a town founded by the Masovian Dukes at the turn of the 13th and the 14th centuries. The Old Town, destroyed in more than 90% during WWII, was rebuilt in the 1950’s and entered to the UNESCO List of World Heritage in September 1980. A visit to the Old Town will reveal the spirit of the past: narrow streets and the market square in a medieval city layout, tenement houses of the 17th and the 18th century. The statue of the mermaid – the icon of Warsaw – sits there in a magical scenery of legends and fairy tales.

THE NEW TOWN

This historic neighbourhood of Warsaw, located just north of the Old Town, was founded in the late 14th century and survived as an independent town until the end of the 18th century. Maria Skłodowska-Curie, our double Nobel Prize winner, was born there at 16 Freta Street.

THE ROYAL CASTLE

Was initially the residence of the Dukes of Masovia. On the death of the last Masovian Duke Janusz and incorporation of Masovia to the Polish Crown, the castle has been reconstructed on several occasions and served as the seat of the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania and as Royal residence. Following the restoration of Poland’s independence in 1918, the castle was the seat of the head of the state. Completely destroyed in 1944, the castle was rebuilt in the 1970’s and the early 1980’s. It is formally called the Royal Castle in Warsaw – Museum Residence of the Kings and the Republic. Paintings by Bernardo Bellotto called Canaletto, Marcello Bacciarelli, Rembrandt and other artists are on display in the castle.

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST’S MARTYRDOM ARCHCATHEDRAL

Commonly called Warsaw Cathedral – a Gothic church located on the site of a wooden chapel, saw a number of reconstructions in its history. Kings Stanislaw Leszczynski and Stanislaw August Poniatowski were crowned and the Constitution of 3 May 1791 was sworn there. Notable Poles, including the Primate of Poland Stefan Wyszynski, were buried here and the Masovian dukes, King Stanislaw August Poniatowski, Gabriel Narutowicz, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Henryk Sienkiewicz were buried in the crypts.

KRAKOWSKIE PRZEDMIESCIE STREET

The “salon” of Warsaw in the 19th century. It is the first section of the 11 km-long Royal Route to Wilanow. The magnates built their residences, literary and fashion salons and coffee houses were established there. Young Frederic Chopin lived and learned in this area and frequently performed in the local aristocratic salons. No wonder then, than you will find there several benches playing the music of Chopin and dedicated to our great composer. His heart was deposited in the Holy Cross Church at the street. Walking along Krakowskie Przedmiescie (the Krakow Suburb) you will see the Presidential Palace, Warsaw University campus, the statues of Primate Stefan Wyszynski, Adam Mickiewicz, Nicolas Copernicus and many other sites of interest.

MARSHALL JOZEF PILSUDSKI SQUARE

An important, if not the most important, square in Warsaw. The imposing Saxon Palace, built there in the early 18th century, housed the Warsaw High School a century later. Nicolas Chopin (the father of Frederic) taught French there. Today, the vestiges of an arcade sheltering since 1925 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (commemorating Polish soldiers killed at various battlefields) is the only remnant of the Palace. The most important national ceremonies are held on the Pilsudski Square.

THE SAXON GARDEN

Is located at the back of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, along the so-called Saxon Axis, an architectural concept by the King August II the Strong, comprising also the Saxon Palace and its cour d’honneur (now Marshall Jozef Pilsudski Square). This first public park in Warsaw (opened in the 1720’s) is still counted among the most beautiful in the city. A wonderful 19th century fountain, one of the four built in the mid-19th century during the construction of the first water supply network in Warsaw, is located in the Garden.

THE ROYAL LAZIENKI PARK

The largest park in Warsaw (76 hectares) located in downtown city. Great Crown Marshall Stanislaw Herakliusz Lubomirski had built his Bath there in the 17th century. A century later Stanislaw August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland, arranged it as his summer residence. The famous Thursday Dinners were held there. The Palace on the Island, the Old Orangery, Myslewicki Palace – are just some of the structures erected by the king in the present Royal Lazienki. Beautiful restored interiors house Stanislaw August’s art collections. Squirrels, peacocks, huge carp fish or (if you are lucky) a roe-deer hiding among the bushes and trees can be spotted in the park.

THE WILANOW PALACE

Or the Museum of King John III’s Palace in Wilanow. This royal residence was built in the second half of the 17th century in the Baroque style (the main building) and in the entre court et jardin layout. Subsequent owners (including Czartoryski, Lubomirski, Potocki families) expanded the residence. In 1805, Stanislaw Kostka Potocki established the first public art museum in Poland here. A wonderful park where the Royal Garden of Light is held every winter, surrounds the Palace.

THE PALACE OF CULTURE AND SCIENCE

Is still the tallest building not only in Warsaw but in whole Poland (237 m including the spire and aerial support). It was built from 1952 to 1955. An example of the socialist realism architecture. An observation deck on the 30th floor offers a wonderful view of the skyline of Warsaw. The Palace hides its secrets and is the subject of several anecdotes.
